Welcome to the third quarterly Sustainability Review of 2011, published as a supplement to the Financial Mail on November 4, 2011

Sustainability Review Issue 7With COP 17 now imminent, we have focussed this review on environmental issues and on the conference itself, including a handy ‘Dummy’s Guide’. Our lead feature, Water: for factory, farm and family, recognises that the long abuse of water and the infrastructure that brings it to our taps now needs to be reversed through the co-operation of industry, government and home users. In the article, we highlight leading practice from SAB, Sasol, PetroSA and Nestle, amongst others.

Our article, COP 17 CEO Business Forum acknowledges the main objectives of the Forum, but also questions whether the interests of small and emerging businesses are being adequately represented through this channel.

This quarter’s sustainability icon is Michael Spicer, recently retired from a long and distinguished career at Anglo American and more latterly from his role as CEO of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA). What would Spicer have to say about the role business should be playing during this era of competing demands on the twin capitals of society and the environment? Find out here.

Our 3rd Quarter Sustainability Coverage Monitor is an independent survey of corporate South Africa undertaken in partnership with The Media Tenor Institute of Media Analysis. Wadim Schreiner draws some thought-provoking conclusions from the data, including the idea that corporate SA should consider the value of investing in more than the ‘sense of sustainability’. The real thing is what wins trust. You may own your brand, but your stakeholders own your reputation. Dig deeper into his insights here. No fees are solicited and no company or organisation has paid to be a part of this survey.

We thank our advertisers Anglo American, Tongaat Hulett, SAB, PetroSA, SAMSA, Implats, Old Mutual, Nedbank, Absa, Vodacom and Rand Merchant Bank. Trialogue upholds its editorial independence, and no editorial has been compromised or influenced by this advertising support.
