The strategies pursued by business managers often have far-reaching effects on local communities and the environment. In developing countries, where poverty and weak government often go hand in hand, a company's ability to navigate between the bottom line and the needs of the community within which it operates is often sorely tested in the face of serious ethical dilemmas. The Business of Sustainable Development argues that a strategic, values-based approach, coupled with a willingness to innovate and collaborate, can not only help a company deal with such challenges, but may even turn such challenges into new opportunities. The overarching themes of human rights, cross-sector partnerships and alternative business models are each conĀsidered in an overview essay in Part 1 of the book. The theory is given content by the diverse case studies in Part 2. Although, this book focuses almost entirely on Africa, the lessons of the case studies and critical essays retain their salience for, and constitute significant contributions to, current debates about how business is and should be conducted around the world today.
